American Academy of Podiatric Sports Medicine Dive Seminar XXII -Utopia!
Written by Mark J. Greenbaum, D.P.M. - Chairman
The AAPSM held its 22nd Annual Dive Seminar at the Utopia Village Resort on the island of Utila, Honduras. After an adventurous arrival consisting of small planes, a boat, and the final leg on the blue jungle bus, ducking to avoid being hit in the face by palm trees and trekking through the mangrove swamp, we arrived at the delightful Utopia Village Resort. The facilities were well appointed considering the rustic location, with a beautiful private beach and tremendously accommodating owners and staff.
In addition to the amazing scientific program, we were in search of the illusive whale shark (which proved to be VERY illusive). A group of 19 participants assembled for a week of lectures, scuba diving, camaraderie, and fun. I have had the great fortune to have participated with this fine group since 1994 and enjoy renewing friendship each meeting with other veterans of the group, as well as getting to know our new members. This year, the group consisted of Alan J. Tenczar, DPM and his cousin , Art Cambell; Catherine Yack, DPM; Dan J. Olsson, DO; Jeffrey C. Pellersels, DPM and his fiancé, Terri S. Koehler; John R. Ludwig, DPM; Leonard Gerber, DPM; Ken Hatch, DPM and companion Linda Miller; Lois Miller, DPM and sister Darlene Miller; Mark Solomon, DPM; Roy Moeller, DPM; John Tennety, DPM and wife, Teresa Burnap, DPM; Roger Gildea; Mark Greenbaum, DPM and wife Christine Robertson, our trip coordinator.
This was our first time coordinating this AAPSM meeting, after the retirement of our previous Chairman Dr. William Van Pelt. Dr. Van Pelt started this program in 1998 and ran the seminar for 21 years. We missed Bill and his lovely wife Judy, and wish them well. All attendees are thankful for the tremendous job they have done over the years. The tone that they set for this meeting is one we will strive to continue for many years to come.
A big thanks to my wife, Christine, for handling the logistics of the groups travels. We will be searching for the next dive destination for next year and will announce it in the coming months. If you have any questions, or are interested in joining us for our next trip, please feel free to contact me at drshark@aol.com or my wife Christine at cerdiver@aol.com. Additional information can be found on www.divepodmed.com and will soon be available on the AAPSM web site. We would also like to thank Rita Yates for AAPSM for all her help with this transition.
